RELATIONSHIPS

Situationship or Soulmate?

A woman looks searchingly at a man whose face is turned away from her in a lit doorway, an empty rain-slicked street stretching into the night behind him.

It has been eight months. There is no label, no plan, and no shortage of feeling. You have asked everyone you know and received a full spread of opinions, and somewhere in there you started wondering whether the intensity itself means something.

This is the question Vedic astrology answers better than expected, mostly by separating two things modern language has collapsed into one.

Attraction and partnership are different houses

The 5th house governs romance, attraction, pleasure, and affairs of the heart. It is where desire lives.

The 7th house governs partnership — commitment, contract, the formal joining of two lives.

A connection lit entirely by the 5th house with no 7th house involvement is, structurally, the situationship. The feeling is real. The attraction is real. There is simply no mechanism in it that converts toward permanence, which is why it can run for years without progressing and without quite ending.

People inside this pattern usually assume something is being withheld. Often nothing is. The connection is doing exactly what its structure allows.

Rahu, and why intensity misleads

Rahu deserves particular attention here, because Rahu-driven connections are the ones most often mistaken for destiny.

Rahu produces obsession, compulsion, and a sense of fated significance — an inability to look away that feels like recognition. It is genuinely powerful and it is not the same thing as compatibility. Rahu connections tend to be consuming, disorienting, and to end when the period governing them ends, at which point people describe the whole thing as having been a kind of spell.

The uncomfortable rule of thumb: intensity is not a compatibility indicator. Frequently it is the opposite. The connections that last are rarely the ones that felt like drowning.

There is no soulmate in Vedic astrology

Worth saying plainly, since the word does a lot of work in this conversation.

Classical Jyotisha has no category corresponding to soulmate. What it does have are three distinct things that get confused with it. Karmic connections, indicated by Rahu and Ketu — intense, unfinished, not necessarily good for you. Durable partnership, indicated by the 7th house and often by Saturn — unglamorous, slow, and lasting. And genuine ease and affection, indicated by well-placed Venus and Jupiter — the connections that are simply pleasant, which people routinely undervalue because they lack drama.

Most people looking for a soulmate are describing the first category and hoping it behaves like the second.

How to actually read your situation

Look at whether your 5th and 7th houses are connected at all — by lord exchange, conjunction, or aspect. Where they are, romance in your life tends to convert into commitment. Where they are not, it tends not to, and repeated situationships are the predictable result rather than a run of bad luck.

Then look at the running dasha. Connections formed under Rahu periods behave differently from connections formed under Venus or Jupiter periods, and knowing which one you are inside explains a great deal about why this feels the way it does.

None of this tells you whether to stay. It does tell you what you are in, which is usually the thing that has been missing.
