In most Indian families this question arrives before you have any opinion on it, and the astrological answer is usually delivered as a verdict — you have a love marriage in your chart, or you do not. That framing is both the most common and the least accurate way to read it.
What the chart actually describes is how you are likely to meet, how much agency you will have in the choice, and how involved your family will be. Those three things produce something more specific than a category.
Two houses, not one
The 5th house governs romance, attraction, and affairs of the heart. The 7th governs marriage, partnership, and the formal contract between two people.
A love marriage, structurally, is a 5th house connection that succeeds in becoming a 7th house one. This is why the relationship between those two houses is the actual indicator — an exchange between their lords, a conjunction, or a mutual aspect. Where the 5th and 7th are linked, romance tends to convert into marriage. Where they are entirely disconnected, people frequently have significant love affairs and marry someone else entirely.
That last pattern is common and rarely explained to anyone in advance.
The markers worth knowing
Venus influencing the 7th house or its lord strengthens the romantic route — Venus is the significator of attraction and of the relationship itself. A Venus-Mars connection adds desire and initiative, which tends to produce relationships that begin with pursuit rather than introduction.
A strong 9th house, by contrast, indicates a marriage that comes through family, tradition, or sanctioned channels. The 9th governs dharma, father, and the established order — its involvement usually means the family is not merely consulted but central.
Rahu touching the 5th or 7th indicates the unconventional: partners from outside your community, culture, language, or expected demographic. Rahu marriages are the ones families describe as surprising.
What the 7th house says about the person
This is the part most people are actually asking about.
The sign on the 7th house, the placement of its lord, and any planets occupying it describe the spouse's temperament and circumstances — not their name or their face, but their register. A Saturn-influenced 7th tends toward an older, more serious, more responsible partner. Jupiter's involvement suggests someone educated, principled, or from a background the family approves of. Mercury indicates youth, communication, and commerce. Venus indicates refinement and attractiveness as a defining quality.
These are broad strokes, and they are meant to be. Any reading that produces a physical description or an initial is inventing detail the chart does not contain.
The binary is dissolving anyway
Most marriages now sit somewhere between the two categories — introduced by family and then chosen freely, or chosen freely and then formally arranged. The chart handles this better than the vocabulary does, because it was never describing a social category in the first place. It was describing agency, timing, and origin.
The genuinely useful output is not which of two labels applies. It is the dasha period during which the 5th and 7th houses become active, which is when this stops being a hypothetical question.
